Equity Actors are a subject that most people don’t know about. But, they actually have a very important part in the theater industry. First of all the Equity Union is a labor union. It represents over 45,000 American theater actors and stage managers just looking for work. This union has been looking for people to be present for 90 years. Having Equity is a great thing for some actors because it gives them better pay for the jobs they acquire! If you are certified then you have to be paid a certain amount for you to be able to perform or manage. When people would like to do these shows they go to certain auditions. You can usually find them in their webpage’s, newspapers and even in magazines. There is some history about Equity Theater too! Back in 1909 when the Theater we have today was just being born, things were tough for the actors. Having to go through rehearsals without getting paid, having to pay for your own costumes and some actors would have to stay on the streets. Some people were so desperate to get into theater like this. A lot has changed since equity came about in these actors lives. But there are still some negative things about this too.
